Shaun began
playing drums at the age of Nine in the fourth grade elementary school
music program. He moved on to study with various other drumming instructors
all the way through high school but he admits that "Playing to my rock
cassette tapes with headphones was always my passion though, and I learned
most of my feel and drumming style this way, playing along to bands like
Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Bad Company, and Van Halen".
He formed his first real original
rock band Paradise Alley with his little brother Travis on guitar, which
later came to be the original heavy metal act Play Rough (where he was
dubbed with the nickname of “Crash”). Play Rough had great
success performing original music at clubs and venues all across New
England including their unforgettable August 1992 performance at the
“Big-Gig” at The Great
Woods Center for the Performing Arts featuring the top 50 Boston
original rock bands at that time. One of the bands singles “Stay
with me” was featured on >Harvey
Warfield’s WCGY “local hero’s” Boston based music
program on Sunday night’s for several weeks of rotations in 1992.
Shaun moved on to play with several
other original and cover bands paying his dues playing four sets a night
and laying down cool tracks during the late 90’s to present. These
days he prefers to play in original bands only and enjoys the creative
freedom of playing/recording his own music and not “jumping on the cover tune bandwagon just to make a few
bucks”.
Some of his previous bands include:
Urchin, Paradise Alley, Play Rough, Peter and the Wolf, Busta Bazoo, Last
Laugh, Crash and the Crashtones, For Pete’s Sake, MF Law, Monkeypox,
Molasses Flood, Broken, Glenn Stuart & South Station, Hot N’
Bothered, and The Dave Clark Band. I am currently in-between projects and
taking some well needed time off.
His most memorable moments in his
drumming career include: Being invited to tour the Zildjian
cymbal factory in Norwell MA by a Zildjian representative that saw him
playing a “For Pete’s Sake” show at the Bell in Hand
Tavern in Boston MA in 1997, Playing Great Woods in August 1992 with
Play Rough<, opening up a show for The Jason Bonham Band while
playing with the band Last Laugh and drinking and hanging out with Jason
Bonham in 1996, hanging out at Narcissus, The Channel, The Rockpile,
and various other rock clubs in and around Boston during the “heavy
metal - hair band days” with former band mates <
John
Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Terry Bozzio (Missing Persons/Frank Zappa/Solo
Artist), Alex Van Halen (Van Halen), Ashwin Sood (Sarah McLaughlin), Adrian
Young (No Doubt), Stewart Copeland (The Police), Jimmy Chamberlain
(Smashing Pumpkins), Scott Rockenfield (Queensryche), Miles Davis, Vivaldi,
Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac).
Likes: Honest people, brunettes, beer, red
wine, good food, Jack Daniels, motorcycles, tattoos & tattoo art, pie
& ice cream, bowling, rollerblading, skiing, being outdoors, hiking,
spending quality time with my kids, and of course – anything that
has to do with DRUMS.
Equipment: I used to play Drum Workshop
drums/pedals/hardware and Zildjian cymbals exclusively, unfortunately my
DW’s were stolen. I am currently playing Gretsch Drums, Zildjian
Cymbals, SJC SNARE DRUMS, and Tama pedals and hardware.
Special thanks: To my parents for never
letting me quit drum lessons and always making me practice as a young kid
even when I didn’t want to. To my brother Travis for several years of
good times in and around our band Play Rough. To all of my friends
who came to all of the shows over the years. To my beautiful daughters
Adrianna Rose and Mikayla Rae for their love and support. Last but not
least, to myself for busting my ass over the years and not giving up on my
dream.
